The Grey Ghost Girls’ Volleyball team swept the Boston-Latin Wolfies in the main gym on Monday, winning all three games convincingly. It was senior night and would therefore be their last home game of the year.

The first game opened up in a back and forth manner, though the Ghosts seemed to be more in control of their play, and were simply getting unlucky to start. The crowd was roaring in support for their seniors, helping them to get on their first run of the game. A 5-0 sequence by WA pushed their lead to 10-5. Their run was highlighted by back to back scores from senior captain Marie McGourty. The Ghosts continued to dominate from there, upping their lead to 18-8. Boston Latin called a timeout to help slow WA, but a dominant display by senior Bridget Allison, the team’s other captain, led the team to a 25-15 victory in the first game.

WA’s momentum continued into the second game, as they opened with an 8-4 lead. The game was back and forth for a little after the strong beginning, resulting in another Boston-Latin timeout with the score being 13-8. The timeout proved detrimental to the Wolfies, as WA went on an 8-1 run after that moment, giving WA a 12 point lead, 21-9. Boston-Latin called another timeout, but at that point the second game was too far out of their reach. The Ghosts took it by a convincing score of 25-11.

The third game was opened strongly once again, as WA went up 7-1 after a series of scores from McGourty, as well as a circus shot from senior Jess Libby. The Ghosts handled the game with ease from there, as great teamwork and an overall loss of momentum on the Boston-Latin side allowed them to go up 17-1 before Boston-Latin was finally able to score. With the outcome in clarity, tears could be seen coming down from the WA seniors’ faces, as it would only be a few more minutes before their high school volleyball careers ended. They blew out Boston-Latin 25-7 to win the final game, sweeping their opponents.

“I think it was the best way possible to end the season,”  said Allison, “while we were definitely emotional we had so much fun playing together one last time. All the seniors have worked so hard for their spots and I think we all play really well together. Definitely one of the best teams I have ever been on.”

Coach Brandon Eang was also proud of the way the girls played, and was happy they had enjoyed doing it.

“They had a blast out there,” he said.

McGourty, who was perhaps the most emotional, greatly appreciated the support she received from her friends and family at her final game. She was also very complimentary of her teammates.

“I thought we played really well and I could not be more proud.” said McGourty. “We pushed throughout the whole game and never let up making it a really great way to end the season.”
