Sports Picks of the Week 2/1-2/8

Sameer Kini
Sports Editor

This week, both national and WA sports have important games to watch. Here are my picks to see for this week.

National – Super Bowl XLV. This week, the choice for my national game to watch was pretty clear cut. For those who did not know, the year’s biggest sports holiday is this Sunday, February 6th. This year, the Pittsburgh Steelers look to win their 3rd championship in the last 6 years when they square off against the Green Bay Packers, who last reached the super bowl in 1998, where they lost to the Denver Broncos.

Throughout the NFL playoffs, I have picked the Packers to win every of their games (see my other Picks of the Week articles for past picks,) and I do not anticipate that changing now. I pick the Green Bay Packers to win Super Bowl XLV by a score of 24-17. Both teams bring a stifling defense into Dallas, where this year’s game will be held. The vaunted Steeler’s D is led by James Harrison and Troy Polamalu, who have played well all year and have super bowl experience. The Packers, on the other hand, have a defense who has emerged over the course of this season, with star players like Clay Matthews and last year’s defensive player of the year Charles Woodson. However, Green Bay’s offense is far more prolific than the Steelers, as Aaron Rodgers has been consistently amazing all year, despite a subpar performance in the NFC championship game. While Big Ben Roethlisberger has experience in this situation, I think the Packers are about as well-rounded as any team in the NFL this year, and they truly deserve to win this title.

WA – Swimming and Diving. This week, the WA swim team will be attending the DCL Swim and Dive Championships which take place from Wednesday to Saturday of this week. WA Swim and Dive hope to continue their successful season, as this year, the strong team has broken many records and performed exceedingly well in meets. WA fans should head out to watch these championships as WA should have a very strong showing. With captain Matt Tynan leading the way, I expect this talented group to make WA sports proud and come up with an impressive showing, possibly taking the DCL crown. Good luck to the WA Boys and Girls Swim and Dive teams as they look to continue their great season this week.
