One Undefeated Left after Week 6
January 25th, 2011On Monday night, the last few games of week six excited both players and viewers. The undefeated Magic fell in the last game putting them at number two in the league. It was a fast paced game although points were at a premium as not many shots were falling.
In the game before, controversy between players and referees arose. Senior Matt Rodgers and sophomore Joe Tyner exchanged words after Tyner fouled Rodgers at the neck.
The two traded some swears and were separated before things got out of hand. The two were forced to sit out the rest of the half, and their teams had to play four versus four.
The crowd was shocked as people yelled “Its rec ball, chill out” and the mocking of this incident would certainly continue for the rest of the night.
Week 4 and yet another Buzzer Beater

Senior Jason Welch, hit a three pointer at the buzzer, with his team down by two, moving his team past the Grizzlies on Sunday. Welch’s team is now one of two 4-0 teams in the league who sit at the top.
Senior Andrew Robinson, a teammate of Welch, said “It’s the best game I have ever been a part of.” At the half, they were down by 13 points and managed to comeback by hitting many three pointers. Then with a few seconds left, when they were down by two, they inbounded the ball to Welch, who shot the ball from half court and celebrated with his team over the shot and the victory.
The Grizzlies are joined by the Chris Mariano and Peter Russo’s team, the Magic, at the top of the leaderboard. The Magic are also 4-0.
A short handed Knicks team lost to the Pistons after they gave up a halftime lead. This was their second game in a row where they went into half leading and lost the game, and they now sit at 0-4.
The Wizards scored a season high 80 points in their win, an impressive figure.
The Pacers, who have been a very good team, lost a close one to the Thunder, who showcase the Barisano brothers.
The rest of the schedule came out early this week which showcases the better games at the more popular game times. The night games will focus on games with teams of better records, whereas the Sunday morning schedule will feature less popular games with teams with worse records facing off.
Teams will look forward to the rest of the season hoping to either stay undefeated, stay in the hunt, or avoid a dreaded win-less season. Also players will be looking to show off their skills for the rest of the year in hopes to make their respective All Star teams for the Night of Roundball at WA later in the year.

Week 3 disappoints and Tempers Flare
January 14th, 2011By Ryan Auger

The Rec Ball League took a week off for the holidays, and would return the last Sunday of vacation. Unfortunately, this was too early for players. There was a lack of people at the games, and not all the players showed up to participate in their respective games leading to many problems regarding substitutes and roster availability.
Many of the games were four versus four, causing players to be very tired from the lack of substitutions during the games. This was one issue of week three and many more would follow.
Senior Eric Meredith, received a technical foul in his game after he was knocked down on a fast break, and no call was made. The crowd mockingly laughed at the no call, and Meredith showed his frustration as he got in the referee’s face and began to argue the call. He got a little too close for comfort for the ref and got the technical.
This left a bad taste in the mouths of the refs on Sunday who clearly have made their point that they will not tolerate complaining.
Junior Joey Brunelle, fouled out of his game right after half time, and unfortunately they only had 5 players at the game. His team choose to sit him during most of the game until it got close at the end, where he would come in and help his team get a big victory. With seconds left, junior Matt Sullivan missed a last second three point attempt, and his team would lose the close game. During the game, Brunelle and his parents, who watched from the crowd, showed their displeasure with the refs many times during the game. At one point, a ref turned to the crowd after making a questionable call, and said “enough” to Brunelle’s dad who was complaining about the call.
The refs showed their anger a lot during the games and have shown their authority to stand by their calls, right or wrong. They have also started to step up on giving out more fouls to players who swear during the game.
There were still good games around the league, despite the bad mood that the refs were in and the lack of players or fans at the games.
Upcoming in week 4 are some of the greater games of the season, as the schedules of some teams have changed in order to make the games more competitive and get closer games to prevent the twenty point blowouts that have been occuring recently. Then, after this week, the rest of the schedule will be released, so fans can get ready for a turn for the good in rec ball weeks to come.

A buzzer beater to begin Week 2
December 23rd, 2010By Ryan Auger
Staff Writer
Week 2 of the Rec ball season began with a bang when Sean Shackleton banked in a buzzer-beater three-pointer with his team down by two. The final score was 40 – 39, with the Rockets defeating the Pistons in an exciting start to week two. Steve Harrison League director said, “It was a great shot that won his team a close game”.
Again the Knicks were throttled losing by 26 points to the Pacers. Senior Brian Rosinski (below) lead the way offensively for the Knicks, but that wasn’t enough; Devin Garvey and Mark Henessey (below) were dominant offensively putting the team on their back. The two teams will meet up again in week 4.
The Thunder won by four measly points over the 76er’s; Joe Barisano had to get the job done without his brother Ralph Barisano. The offense of the Thunder without Joe was unable to get into a flow, but Joe returned to the game with it tied at 39 with two minutes to play. His free throws closed the game.
On Monday night The Grizzlies got things done without their leading scorer from week one and were able to win easily 67 – 36 over The Jazz.
The Grizzlies have won both their games by big margins of 31 this week and 34 last week looking like the top team in the league sitting at 2-0.
The warriors handled The Cav’s 59 – 38, and there was a close game between the Hornets and the Nets. Thomas Wauford and Mark Mastandrea were able to get the Nets their first win, 47 – 44.
Week two introduced some new issues. One was the reffing. There are a few new referees, to go along with the usuals such as Mr.Quattrocchi. These new ref’s hopefully will set a high standard and make the calls when necessary. But the new referees made some questionable calls, which is the reason why they are being brought up.
Christian Prusaczyk was bringing the ball up the court during a play and was hit with a fierce elbow by the defense playing tight. The ref blew his whistle and called a ten second violation. It was obvious that the crowd disagreed with the call. The call might have been fair of it was a backcourt.
This was a major blown call on a day of may others.
I feel that the referees usually do an excellent job having to make hard decisions, but this was not their best weekend in my opinion.
Besides the blown calls, there were quality games mixed with blowouts by lots of points. In two weeks, games will start up again. Some teams will be facing teams they have already played.
One thing to look forward to is the new schedule in the fifth week. The competition should be closer with the next four games, which will be based on records. There should be many close and exciting matches.

Not the same old Pats
December 20th, 2010by Ryan Auger
Staff Writer
On Sunday night the New England Patriots faced off against the Green Bay Packers. At the beginning of the season this game seemed like a prime time match up befitting Sunday night football.
This all seemed to change when Packers’ quarterback Arron Rodgers, was sidelined on Saturday due to a previous concussion, but the Pats nevertheless would make it a great game.
The Pats started out the game slow, fumbling an unexpected onside kick which led to a field goal by the Packers.
The Pats were down 10-17 at half time, after the farthest kickoff return by an Offensive linemen. Dan Conolly, the right guard for the Pats, returned the ball 71 yards to the six yard line setting them up with a TD pass to Aaron Hernandez.
The momentum started to shift and would continue when the Patriots defense stepped up with Kyle Arrington intercepting a pass from Matt Flynn Packers QB, and broke multiple tackles to score with the pick six.
The Packers then drove down the field, and some costly penalties hurt the Pats as the Packers came back to score and found themselves up by three, 24 – 21.
The Packers got the ball back and drove down the field, but the Pats’ defense held tight and the Packers kicked the field goal, making the score 27 – 21.
The Pats got the ball then for the second time of the half in the fourth quarter, but were unable to get more than a field goal, still down 24 – 27.
Devin McCourty, Patriots’ cornerback recorded his first career sack, leading to the Pats getting the ball back with around 10 minutes left in the game. Plays by Danny Woodhead and Deion Branch led the Pats down the field, when Hernandez caught his second TD of the game on first and goal. Pats led 31 – 27.
Rookie Dan Fletcher sacked Flynn with 51 seconds left, forcing the Packers to use their last timeout. A few plays later, at a fourth and one, the clock was running down and the inexperienced Flynn wasted time, and was sacked on their last play, giving the Pats the win.
The Pats defense is back as they secured the win with key sacks and INT’s throughout the game.
Their defense was solid against the Bears and stifled the Jets to three points a few weeks back on Monday night football. This Pats defense is what makes the Patriots the favorite approaching the playoffs in a few weeks, as they attempt to make it to the Superbowl for the fifth time in 9 years.
Tom Brady set the NFL record for single season completions without an interception at 287 in the 4th quarter, adding another record to the profile of the future hall of fame quarterback.
Anticipated Week 1 Lives up to Hype

Week one of the rec ball season started for the high school boys’ 10 to 12th league, and some teams came out with a bang. There were upsets, many blowouts and a few close wins of evenly matched teams.
Adam Ciampi and The Suns, easily handled The Knicks who were without two of their top players, 57-37.
The Pacers one of the teams I think will win the championship, defeated The Hornets in a blowout. The Hornets were frustrated during the game and this was shown when Senior Mark Mastandrea yelled “I’m sick of not getting rebounds” after a hustle play to save the ball led to a fast break layup by the other team. There was a final score of 58-38.
The marquee match up of the day was The Magic, lead by Peter Russo who scored 20 defeating the power house Barisano’s in the closest game of the day. The game was tied at 43 with 1:22 left in the game when The Magic scored 2 points, and would have a solid defensive stand stopping The Thunder, defeating them 45-43.
After the game Peter Russo said, “They were really good defensively and pestered us when we were on offense, but we were able to get it done in the end.”
These were two of the better teams in the league and they competed very well against each other, but in the end one of them had to lose.
The Cavaliers were blown out big time by 36 points by The Grizzlies. Senior Jack Krieg lead the way for the Grizzlies with 26 points, one of the highest outputs of the day, points wise. The final was 70-36, and senior Zach Ingalls was not happy with his team’s performance.
Also in this game John Troy made a play on the ball fouling Chris Underwood drove to the hoop; this was called a flagrant foul, and we would later find out Underwood broke his ankle on the play.
Another impressive win was The Wizards over The Jazz. The Wizards without Senior Pat Dugan upset The Jazz, 50-42. The Wizards hit many three’s and Junior Harrison Saro ran the offense really well at the point guard and helped the team get many open three’s which they hit.
The Mavericks lost to the Bulls, 38-42 in a close game in the final minutes.
The Pistons a team who looked good before their game, lost 60-38 in a big defeat.
After the game, Seamus Mckinney said, ” I was cold the entire night, but of course I hit a last minute half court three; that’s just the way the game was going.”

WA Track runs over BL
December 16th, 2010by Ryan Auger,
Staff Writer
On Thursday December 9th, the WA Track Team took on Boston Latin at the Reggie Lewis Center near Boston. The Boys team put up a number of good performances, dominating Latin 77-19.
Before the meet on the bus into Boston, runner Reed Peraner had his portable speakers blasting music, as he does every meet, to pump up the team on their way to the competition. Then as the team arrived at “the Reggie” coach Archuambault of the boys’ team, gave a quick speech with one main point, give the effort they would give any other team.
“Word of the day is “impress,” impress your teammates, impress your coaches, and show Latin what you’ve got,” said Archambault, hoping to energize the team to perform at its best.
One top performance of the day was Nick Scuito who certainly impressed with a time of 4:51 in the mile. He took home first place for WA in that event.
Senior Adonis Carrasco competed and won the high jump with a final jump of 6’0. Carrasco came close to breaking the school record of 6’2.
” I wanted to get that record and was really close,” said Carrasco after the meet.
One of the most impressive performances of the day had to be Ryan Hurley. This senior was competing in his first ever track and finished 3rd in the high jump and 3rd in the long jump.
Overall the entire team preformed well, sweeping many events. Westford enjoyed the bus ride home, as Archambault called out the final score of the meet, and the team rejoiced all the way back to WA.

Rec Ball is where it’s at
December 10th, 2010By Ryan Auger
Staff Writer
In the view of many boys at the Academy, recreational basketball is one of their favorite things during the year. It causes a great deal of excitement for the players, fans, coaches, and parents of all involved.
This year, for the first time, there is a new 8th and 9th grade league. One of the causes of this change is due to the different abilities of seniors versus freshmen. There were many problems such as hard fouls that occurred when the seniors were playing against the freshmen. Now the league for the high school boys is made up of 180 10th to 12th grade students, consisting of 24 teams of about 7-8 players each.
Rosters were released Sunday night, and emails were sent out from the coaches.
On Wednesday, all the team members met with their coaches to get their shirts and have a quick scrimmage against another team. This helped to get reacquainted with the game and process and was also extra court time for those who hadn’t played in a while.
Some teams look promising and others could struggle.
One team has one of the greatest pair of stars, Joe and Ralph Barisano. These two players are very dynamic scorers, rebounders, and extremely athletic. They make a strong pair to hopefully bring their team, The Thunder, far this year.
Peter Russo and Chris Mariano, two talented seniors who can both shoot the deep three and drive to the hoop with intensity, with teammates Dustin Parks and Will Clark, make The Magic look like one of the top teams in the league.
The 76er’s, another team who looked strong in their preseason scrimmage, with seniors Christian Prusaczyk and Josh Gallo, have excellent ball handling and a strong drive to the basket. This team will be rather good in not just on the half court offense but the fast break as well.
Last year’s champion, The Warriors look to be a strong team with players Alex Eaton, Eric Cajolet, and Jason Welch, who were stars on their respective teams last year, and hope to combine their different styles of play and high scoring abilities to make a great team.
Great players Mike Mizzoni and Adam Champi look to bring their hustle play all season long, starting in the first game of the Rec season Sunday at 10 against The Knicks who currently are missing Brady Flynn to a hip injury. This team has a lot of height and looks to be one of the better rebounding teams in the league.
Lastly, The Pistons and Pacers seem to have two of the more solid lineups in the league, with all of their players contributing to their teams’ talent.
This year looks to be much more fair than the past with not many super teams in the league. In the past freshmen did not get the ball much and were not able to contribute as much to their teams as the upperclassmen. Now in a separate league, the freshmen will have fair competition with the 8th graders. There will surely be some close games and one of the best championship teams in a while.
LBJ makes his Return
December 3rd, 2010By Ryan Auger

Thursday, December 2nd, Lebron James one of the best players in the NBA returned to Cleveland, his home for the first 7 years of his career, to face off against his now rival Cavaliers.
In his return, Lebron and the Heat easily defeated the Cavs 118-90, winning by 28 points.
In Cleveland, James earned Rookie of the Year and back to back league MVP’s. James had many comparisons to many top players in NBA history, although he won no championships with the team, making it to the finals once where they were swept by the San Antonio Spurs.
Over the summer James left the Cavaliers through free agency, which broke the hearts of the Cleveland fans.
James hosted on ESPN, The Decision where he told the entire nation watching for the first time that he would be joining the Miami Heat with All-Stars Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh. This decision was one of the most notable free agent signings in NBA history.
The hype and anticipation started when the NBA schedule first came out, as this was possibly one of the biggest games of the year for the Heat. Although the team had high expectations with their new stars, it has been a disappointing start to the season, going 1-7 against teams with a record of .500 or better and crushing the sub .500 teams going 11-1 against them.
Lebron talked about the game in Cleveland, earlier in the week and said “it’s gonna be a little sad and very emotional draining.”
Cavaliers guard, Mo Williams who played with Lebron in Cleveland said, “It’s like your ex-girlfriend coming to you wedding…”, as he tried to explain the situation to reporters Thursday morning.
Coming into the game various websites and twitters were encouraging fans to show their hatred for James by creating certain chants.
The crowd was so loud TNT who covered the game had to adjust the audio to limit the crowd noise, which was booming with boo’s for James as his name was called. Then right before the game started the traditional powder toss received one of the loudest boo’s from the crowd in the night.
Signs throughout the arena read “Quitness” referring to the James Wittness poster that hung on the side of the Quicken Loans Arena during his time with the Cavs. There were signs hinting at Traitor Not Talent with T.N.T in massive letters along with many more creative slogans.
One major precaution made by the Arena was that alcoholic drinks were served in paper cups and not the usual bottles to prevent fans from throwing the bottles onto the court.
In the beginning, the game was close and the crowd was very into the game, cheering at every basket the Cavs made and attempting to discourage James every time he got the ball.
At the half, James had 14 points, and the Heat had a sufficient lead of 19 points, up 59 – 40.
During the third quarter, the Heat took over and Lebron was the old Lebron, scoring 24 of his 38 points in the third, where the Heat increased their lead and sealed the game away.
The fourth quarter was all about Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh, as James sat the entire quarter. James Jones off the Heat bench scored 18 in the game, a majority of which was 4 three point field goals. Wade also contributed a near triple double at 22 points, 9 rebounds, and 9 assists.
Miami went on to easily win 118 to 90, beating the Cavs by a large deficit of 28 points.
The security was definitely stepped up for the night, and it was definitely needed, as many people were ejected from the building, including one man who ran on the court during the second quarter while Miami shot a pair of free throws.Lebron finished the game with 38 points, 5 rebounds, and 8 assists. The 38 points for James was a season high and he did it in only 30 minutes of playing time.
Lebron in post game said, “I wanted to be aggressive in the third, and every night will be a hostile environment, just as today, just not as emotional for me.”
In response to the Cleveland fans, James said, “We had a great seven years here, and I tried my best to bring a championship, but I don’t regret my decision and shouldn’t have to apologize for it or leaving Cleveland.”
Craving a Calzone?
November 4th, 2010By Ryan Auger
Staff Writer
Over the past few years, a new food craze has hit Westford residents. Chicken fingers, buffalo chicken fingers, french fries, pepperoni, pineapple, meatballs, bacon, and even mozzarella sticks are now being used in an Italian classic to create one of the most popular foods in Westford: the calzone.
The calzone originates from Italy. It’s a large piece of dough filled with assorted cheeses and toppings. Usually, calzones are made with only one topping, which is loaded inside. However, now people are starting to order crazy combinations, which include two or even three toppings. Chicken fingers and Cajun fries is one of the most popular combinations. One of the most popular single topping calzone is filled with buffalo chicken fingers. It’s “ordered on a daily basis on weekends” according to WHOP management.
Westford House of Pizza or “WHOP”, and Nashoba Pizza and Seafood are the case of this recent craze. These two establishments in Westford are owned by the same management and produce similar items. Of course both produce the calzones that cause calzone cravings, but some prefer Nashoba due to its seating and bigger location, whereas others prefer WHOP for its location next to Tedeschi’s, a popular convenience store.
The people working at Nashoba could also contribute to the many reasons that have people wanting a calzone. The workers and manager are very kind and tend to always get orders right. On the rare occasion that they do mess up, they let you keep the original order and the mistake order at no extra cost. They make sure they get the order right and at a very efficient speed. If they fail, the customer is rewarded.
The cost of the Calzones are typically the same from the two establishments. For example, a large calzone with one special topping ranges around $16, or with a regular topping such as bacon or pepperoni would cost around $12, a reasonably cheaper cost. The size of the Calzones are nearly identical at both places, and the quality at both is excellent..

Uprising Artist, Trevor Buckingham, Featured in Deadfish
October 29th, 2010By Ryan Auger, Staff Writer
Deadfish, an up and rising band, starring Trevor Buckingham, a senior at WA has been getting more attention due the number of shows they have been performing in the past few weeks.
Notoriously known as “T-Buck”, Buckingham began his musical career and writing lyrics at a young age. He then joined Deadfish in January 2010.
He “finally got to showcase [his] talent with Deadfish and expand [his] horizons past hip-hop,” said Buckingham.
This band covers many different styles of music such as Reggae, Rock, and Hip-Hop.
Deadfish includes, Travis Nadow, Zach Taylor, Dana Shoults, T-Buck, and Taylor Davis. All the Members of Deadfish are ages 18 to 19.
Nadow, leads the band on guitar, and Davis is the Drummer for Deadfish. Shoults and Taylor play bass and rhythm guitar respectively. Buckingham mainly is the vocals of the group, but the rest of the group also contributes to vocals in various songs.
Deadfish compares themselves to Sublime, a very well renowned band in the late 90’s and is still known today with one of their most popular singles “What I Got”. Deadfish features many styles of music that appeal to the old, young, and everywhere between.
Buckingham explained the meaning to one of their top songs, “As We Run”.
“It’s about living life to the fullest and just having fun. We’ve had a great reaction to it and seems to be enjoyed by all our fans,” said Buckingham.
During my meeting with Buckingham he had some wise words for all other musicians out there.
“Never give up, is what I’ve learned is important. Even when there is tension between members or it seems like it will be a bad show, we always have to give it our all. This always results in an award. This has happened to us a couple times in Battle of the Bands. We had to play first to a small crowd but won 1st place both times, one which included 50 other bands.”
Many shows have been performed by the group at local venues such as the Tiki Bar, and many other venues in the Boston area over the summer. The group has a show at the Outlook Restaurant at the Nashoba Valley Ski Area this Saturday, but it’s for ages 21+. Deadfish hopes to perform at a Parish for its younger fans sometime in November.
Deadfish is currently finishing up their first studio album set to release some time in spring 2011.
More information on Deadfish can be found on their Facebook page “Deadfish”, and several other social networks. Their music is available for listening to on their webpage, www.deadfishmusic.com.
Smooth and Supportive at Open Mic Night
October 12th, 2010By Ryan Auger

On Sunday, the 26th of September the parish center held an open mic night.
“It is a great place to work on one’s performance skills. Everyone is very supportive because everyone is a beginner sometime.” said John Ferullo, who runs the Westford Parish Arts Center Open Mic Nights on every second and fourth Sunday night. Here, anyone can come and prepare an act of any talent level and perform. The mood was very supportive.
Some people do original acts and cover songs. Liz Buchanan and Gordon McFarland played an original song together, and Dan and Faith Senie also played original written songs.
Suzanne Owens, Betsy Binstock, and Cheryl Perrault shared some spoken pieces and poems.
Two artists, Robert Grappel and Lynda Cohen, played custom pieces on the autoharps with a soothing sound . Artist Ben Blum played a blues tune on the ocarina which was accompanied by piano and autoharps in the background. Jim Michener also performed and played a great piece on the fiddle.
John Ferullo was the feature act on Sunday. Other artists included Rich Mungo, Karen Gault, and Carolyn Wauters.
“We try to create a supportive community, and hopefully we do so and can continue to do so, to help artists who need to collaborate with others,” said Ferullo. This supportive community was apparent. If acoustic music is your style or you want to come and support some great local musicians, Open Mic Night is the place to be.
