Chamber Music Named State Festival Winner

On Saturday March 27th Westford Academy was named a Festival Winner of the final round of the Massachusetts high school drama guild festival.
The cast was the eleventh school to perform, starting off the third and final day of festival which had begun on Thursday the 25th. The show finished just in time with fifteen seconds to spare from the forty minute limit thanks to some quick thinking by stage manager Jordan Welch when the show started to run too long.

Chamber Music Moves on to Semi-Finals

The cast of Chamber Music will advance to the semi-finals round of the 2010 Massachusetts Drama Guild State Festival after a great performance during Preliminary round on Sunday Febuary 28th, hosted by Naraganset Middle School in Baldwinville, MA. In addition to being named Festival Winner, Westford Academy received five All Star Cast awards for both acting and technical aspects of the production. Read the rest of this entry “

Chamber Music Breaks the Competition Trend

For this year’s competition play, Westford Academy Theatre Arts will be performing absurdist playwright Arthur Kopit’s Chamber Music. The single act play set in the 1930′s tells the story of eight women in a mental institution, who believe they are famous women from history as they prepare for an alleged attack from the men’s ward. Performances at WA will be on February 25th, 26th, and March 11th.

WA’s 2009 Diversity Assembly a Success

During December 15th‘s advisory block, the freshmen and sophomore classes attended a Diversity Assembly. Various WA student speakers represented not only the different racial, ethnic, and religious groups, but also the disabled and lesbian students as well.
Mrs. Kumar lead the discussion, asking the students different questions about their opinions on how accepting the student population and faculty are to the school’s diversity along with how open certain aspects such as the school curriculum are open to minorities.

Presents for Paws

The WA Animal Rights League is holding a holiday pet supply drive for local animal shelters from December 4th to January 7th. Donation boxes will be placed outside the library and in the bell lobby near the main entrance. Lists of the needed supplies will be placed at those locations, and will be on some signs posted throughout the school. Donations will be brought to Greyhound Friends, the Lowell Humane Society, Kitty Angels, and Stray Pets in Need. Read the rest of this entry “
Chicago: Behind the Scenes

Westford Academy Theatre Arts performed the hit musical “Chicago” the past two weekends. The play, directed by Larry Sousa, opened on November 6th, and was also performed on the 7th, 8th, 12th, 13th, and 14th.
The cast was a little different from night to night; the role of Roxie Hart was double casted, and was played by both Katie Wright and Liza Gosselin. The 1920’s set musical portrayed the mayhem occurring in society as the media is turning criminals into celebrities.

WA’s new cellphone policy: fair or too harsh?

In previous years, the cell phone policy allowed students to retrieve their confiscated phones at the end of the day. Now however, parents must pick up the student’s phone from the office for them. The policy was decided on by the school’s handbook committee, which consisted of five or six students and a teacher from each department; and has had some mixed reactions. Night at the Funhouse

Last Friday Pink’s Funhouse World Tour stopped in the Boston Garden for one of the most amazing concerts I’ve ever seen. Not only did I get a chance to hear one of my long time favorite artists, but I also got a chance to experience some music from a group I wasn’t to familiar with, The Ting Tings. Teacher Profile: Mrs. Bonakdar

For four years Mrs. Bonakdar taught sixth grade Language Arts at Stony Brook Middle School, but this year she’ll be teaching ninth and eleventh grade English here at Westford Academy.
