On Thursday, April 2, WA Boys’ Volleyball crushed Wayland 3-1 at their first home game of the season.

WA had lost power to the main gym, so the teams were competing in the low light ambiance of the aux gym for the first set of the game.

Beginning the game weakly, WA had a large losing streak at the beginning of the first set, eventually losing it 17-25.

However, the pace for WA picked up at the beginning of the second set, and they maintained a large lead over Wayland for the first half of the game. With the power returning in the middle of the set, WA brought power onto the court as well, maintaining a solid lead throughout the set, and winning the set. 25-18.

The third set began well for WA, and the boys were able to gain a lead during the beginning of the set, but Wayland closed the gap soon. WA was still able to pull through in the end though, winning the set 25-21.

The fourth set started off slowly for WA again, but WA was able to tie up the game 10-10 in the middle of the set. After a streak of powerful hits by senior Chris Imbriaco, WA was able to gain the lead again, winning the set 25-19 and winning the game 3-1 overall.

While this initial win is important for the team as the first home game of the season, Coach Russell Coward sees room for improvement.

“We started pretty slowly, and I was disappointed in that. But we came back very nicely. […] Some of our senior players played the way that I expect them to play,” said Coward, adding that he was optimistic about the team’s future for the rest of the season.
