    Girls’ hockey defeated

The varsity girls’ hockey team faced a tough loss tonight against Arlington- Catholic in the MIAA Division 1 playoff game with a final score of 6-2.

Up until the last period, it was a well-played game for both teams. It was a back and forth until the third period, when Arlington-Catholic’s offense proved to be too much for WA’s defense.

Senior Jacqui Dagle said the team knew it would be a fast and aggressive game, and that was shown in the first period, when WA had a tough start. AC scored for their first goal 35 seconds after the start of the game, but freshman Katie Campbell quickly scored for WA three minutes later.

Although the rest of the first period was largely spent on WA’s half of the ice,  senior Kerry Pouliot had several consecutive great saves at the net. With three minutes left in the first period, AC scored again, making the score 2-1 with WA behind.

However, in the second period the game was more evenly played and ten minutes into the period sophomore Katie Hargrave scored on an incredible breakaway for WA, tying the score 2-2. The rest of the period was uneventful, with some more good saves by Pouliot for WA.

The third period saw some good defense from WA, but the puck rarely left their half of the ice. Within the last eight minutes of the game, AC scored  4 more times, proving to be just too much for WA.

“I don’t think the mood [of the team] changed in the first and second [period] compared to the third,” said Dagle.”We wanted to give it our all, and we tried to the entire game.”

Overall, WA tried their best, but it just wasn’t enough compared to the powerful AC offense. Dagle said that the team was definitely sad over the loss, but also proud.

“We came a long way since the end of the season,” she said.
