Sophomore Cogliano commits to Boston College for D1 Lax

On Wednesday, February 4, sophomore Haley Cogliano committed to Boston College to play on their division one lacrosse team. Cogliano, who will soon be playing for a top-10 college team, made WA’s varsity team as a freshman and has also played on club teams to give colleges a large sample size. She was also being recruited by Harvard, Stanford, and Brown, but chose BC on account of the fact that they made her an offer before the other schools and her family, including her recently graduated sister, have largely attended BC. Her brother is currently attending as well.

According to Cogliano, the recruiting process began for her during her freshman year when she began to draw interest from many schools near and far. On the subject of eventually choosing BC, Cogliano said, “When I was growing up I would always be there watching their football games and just visiting them and I just love the environment.”

The coach from BC called Cogliano approximately a month ago to make her an offer, saying that she could take as much time as she needed to make a decision.

“About a month passed and I decided to call her back… I wanted to be a part of the family,” said Cogliano.

Cogliano will be playing Division 1 lacrosse at one of the top programs in the country.

Cogliano also cited her participation in club lacrosse as an important part of the recruiting process. It gave teams more time to scout and create reports to give back to coaches, directors, etc. Many of the club tournaments she participated in were designed for the purpose of recruiting; they would be filmed and attended by various college head coaches.

Eventually, Cogliano attended a clinic hosted at BC where she was able to work with current players and coaches to improve her game. At this point in the process, BC had not yet called to make an offer, but had announced they would soon be doing so.

“I just went and I tried my best and the she called and offered me a spot on the team,” said Cogliano, “… They give you tips and [the players at the camp] are all so nice and friendly.”

On the subject of committing so early, Cogliano said that it was actually not as rare as it may seem, and that many of the tournaments she attended were filled with players her age. Though the college process is essentially over for her, she still has to take her SATs and maintain in good academic standing. She also must showcase consistent improvement in her play on the field.

According to Cogliano’s teammate, junior Ellie Diamond, “[Cogliano] is a very dynamic player who brings athleticism and great stick skills. She has an eye for reading the field, seeing opportunities, and creating plays.”

When senior year comes around for Cogliano, her future coach will begin sending her workouts to maintain form over the summer. WA head coach Julie Oliver, who occasionally goes to BC practices, also maintains a relationship with their coach as well.

Oliver, who had nothing but praise for Cogliano, said, “Haley brings a dedicated work ethic and a positive team attitude to the field.” She continued by saying, “She is always prepared for practice and games. I am very excited for Haley and her commitment to Boston College; outstanding! BC is currently ranked 7th in the country and is one of the top ACC teams. To be recruited at this level as a sophomore speaks to her talent, drive, and determination.”

According to Cogliano, her parents were “on a roller coaster” throughout her stressful process but were “very supportive the whole time.”

Cogliano attended prospect days at other colleges as well, but BC still ended up being her favorite.

As far as WA lacrosse goes, Cogliano said, “hopefully we win a lot of games this year and keep the team going strong… We lost a lot of players but hopefully we can just keep it going.”
