Breakfast Club serves WA

Lauren Cullen
Editor-in-Chief

Many people, including WA students and staff, skip breakfast every morning, which experts say is the most important meal of they day.  Although some breakfast items are served in the cafeteria each morning before classes start, it is sometimes nice to switch up your routine.   Once a month, the Life Skills class at WA is doing just that.

The Life Skills class holds a “Breakfast Club” on one Friday a month. The students prepare various breakfast items for students and staff at WA and then deliver them out to their classrooms. The Breakfast Club sends out a reminder to all staff at WA and posts signs in the halls with the upcoming dates of the program.

Typically, six students participate in the program. Each student is paired with a teacher from the Student Support Services department, and they spend the whole first block preparing orders of various breakfast food items. The Breakfast Club offers a variety of food ranging from hot bagels and French toast sticks to yogurt and granola parfaits.

This program has existed in past years at WA, but this year, Student Support Teacher Andrew Duquette said they revamped the program.

This year we tried to restart the program by emphasizing our safe work with food through good hygiene and good products,” said Duquette. “The students chose Breakfast Club for our new name to show teachers that we are new and improved.”

Duquette said he thinks that the Breakfast Club has a positive influence on his students and they get to practice things like shopping, proper food preparation, and delivery.

After doing it a few times since the start of this school year, Duqette said they have gotten both positive feedback from customers as well as constructive criticism to improve their program.

Administration are also big fans of the program. Dean Murphy said she thinks it is a great program and likes to order breakfast from the Breakfast Club as well.

“I think it’s a great project for the kids,” said Murphy.

Overall, the Breakfast Club is doing great work for the WA community, and also learning in the process. The next Breakfast Club will be held on Friday, January 30th during C and D blocks.
