Students prepare for floor hockey to start up for a second session.

The past three weeks have arguably been the most wonderful time of the year for many WA students. Not because the holidays are right around the corner, but because floor hockey season is here and will sadly come to an end as early as Tuesday.

Floor hockey will still run after the scheduled end date because there will be a school wide floor hockey tournament that will take place next Tuesday, December 23rd.

This is the first time that gym teachers are having floor hockey go school-wide. Students and faculty alike are excited about this expansion.

“The students were really excited about floor hockey this year and that helped prompt us to try and organize a school wide tournament,” said PE teacher Jeff Bunyon.

“I’m happy that they are doing it although the date is a bit inconvenient,” said senior Matt Kapetanakis.

Not only has the floor hockey activity created an after school event, but players that are taking gym and have floor hockey as an activity are putting up a valiant effort to extend floor hockey another activity session. On Friday, December 12, students created a petition to extend floor hockey and got roughly 200 signatures, a staggering amount for a day alone.

That amazing student response prompted the PE department to offer floor hockey for another activity period.

“The student response was amazing,” said Bunyon. “There was definitely a big enough response for us to offer floor hockey as an activity again,” said Bunyon.

The PE department and the students are not the only people who understand the activity’s popularity. WABC will broadcast the championships live so all the students and faculty who cannot watch the event from the stands can still watch from their classroom.
