Westford Academy is hosting a tailgate prior to the last regular season football game against Lincoln-Sudbury on October 24th. Any community group at the academy or within the town has the ability to reserve themselves a spot and join the excitement.  This is the fifth year in a row this event has been around, and it has continuously proven itself to bring in some Westford spirit.

Every year, people fill the WA parking lot and settle in to enjoy the food and the atmosphere. Any community group has the right to reserve a tailgating spot, but it is a first come, first serve deal.

The groups of people attending can vary from the WA girls basketball team to boy scouts. Members of such clubs are present  to appreciate their own members as well as other relative community groups.

A prize of a 100 dollar gift card is given out to the group that displays the most outstanding school spirit, so it is important to be ready for the competition.  With an event that stresses school spirit, it becomes easier to bring the community and fan section together.

Dan Twomey, director of the athletic department says, “The main goal is kind of to just increase the school and community spirit […] Another goal is too also increase the different types of students and groups to come to the football game.”

The homecoming game will be a big one for the Westford Academy football team as they are looking to bounce back from a tough loss on the road against Newton South after the big win the week before against Waltham.

Twomey said, “[People enjoy tailgate because of] the atmosphere. Its a fun thing to do to get together with your friends […] It’s a fun, social event.”
