Listen to the clichés

By Kyle Auger
Editor-in-Chief

While laying in a pile of clothes I need to pack for the class of 2014’s Disney trip, I find myself reminiscing on my years at Westford  Academy.

The first things I remember is the summer before my freshman year; I was a confusing mix of scared and excited. For some reason, when people learn that you are entering high school each and every person seems eager to share their own experiences and advice towards the big change.

I still remember my frustration after hearing four aunts and three grandparents reiterating the same cliches like “get involved” and “focus on your grades”, but as I face my near graduation, I realize these phrases rang true.

As a freshman I took journalism as an elective and I instantly enjoyed it. From there I stuck to the class, taking it all four years while being active in the club as well. Throughout the years as part of the paper there was many great accomplishments, from becoming sports editor, then editor-in-chief, culminating with the Ghostwriter being named the best online newspaper in New England.  I now find myself thanking my family for pushing me to take the class and stick with it.

Along with journalism, academics were a focus for a  huge portion of my  energy in my time at Westford Academy, but when I started I did not try enough early nor put enough weight in their importance.  I left myself with an uphill climb, and trust me, it is better to have to maintain rather than improve.

As the time passed, I was able to budget my time better and realized if I studied at all, and occasionally read the books we were supposed to for English class I, not surprisingly, did better. When I was a freshman I thought the constant reminders from adults, namely my mom, were just an annoyance but now see them as a blessing.

As I look back and look forward to college and the great beyond, I leave you with one piece of advice: don’t be so quick to brush off the cliches, they’re more important than you think.
