The freshman class wandered the gym exploring new interests for the coming year

On Tuesday, September 13, students of the freshman class had the opportunity to explore new interests and activities at the annual Westford Academy activities fair. Here, freshmen had the chance to learn about the many after school clubs that WA offers.

The timing of this year’s activities fair differed greatly from previous ones. Instead of being held on the very first day of school, the lovingly named “freshman day”, as only students of that class attend school, it was held on the year’s first advisory day. The decision to move the date of the event was made before the first day of school was cancelled due to Hurricane Irene. Dean of students and activities coordinator Bob Ware said that this was done to allow the freshman class to acclimate to their new schedules, homework loads and sports obligations before further committing their time to an after school club.

“We changed [the date of the fair] for a couple of reasons. The first day of school the freshmen don’t really have their feet on the ground and they have no indication of what their first month or two are going to be like. [For these reasons] we wanted to wait a couple weeks and have it on our first advisory day,” said Ware.

The decision to move the fair from the cafeteria to the main gym was also made in order to allow more room for both the freshmen and the clubs being represented. There were 52 different clubs representing themselves this year, which is a larger number than were present at last year’s fair. The set up of this year’s allowed for a more personal experience between representees and freshman.

“We wanted to go with a fair/flea market mentality where [the students] can ‘walk and shop’ and really get a grasp of what we offer here,” said Ware.
