Sports Picks of the Week 3/29-4/5

By Sameer Kini
Sports Editor

This week, both national and WA sports have some great games to see. Here are my picks of the week.

National – The Final Four. The decision for what to pick as the national games to watch was tough this week, with Opening Day baseball competing with the Final Four. However, the Final Four represents the culmination of one of the best tournaments in the world, and I had to side with NCAA basketball. It has been one hectic tourney with upsets galore. Some readers may remember me picking the Ohio State Buckeyes to win it all. Not only was that wrong, but one day before the tournament, I had actually changed my champ to Duke, since Kyrie Irving was coming back. It turns out both did not even make the Final Four, and in fact, not a single one seed will be competing in Houston.
As for my picks, I expect that the Final Four should be complete with close games, crazy endings and March’s patented Madness. In the first game, I expect the Kentucky Wildcats to beat the UConn Huskies to reach the finals. Earlier in the year, the Huskies were able to conquer the Cats in Maui with their strong transition game. However, the Wildcats proved with their win over UNC that they are defensively ready for Kemba Walker, and I think they will handle UConn this time. In the next game, I will take Butler over VCU. The Bulldogs have experience in this situation, and I think Cinderella VCU is growing out of their slipper. Expect Butler to take on Kentucky in the finals. This game will prove to be highly competitive, and a new national champion will be crowned. I think the Wildcats are a much deeper, more athletic team than the Bulldogs. Freshman Brandon Knight has not faltered up to this point, and his supporting cast members Josh Harrelson and DeAndre Liggins should lead the Cats to victory. Expect Kentucky to experience their one shining moment, and cut down the nets in Houston.

WA – Opening of the Spring Season. For this week, I could not pick just one game, or even just one sport to feature for my pick. The spring season is about to start, and WA looks to start strong in all sports. All teams have their first few games late this week, so fans should head out to see teams such as baseball, lacrosse, softball, track, tennis and volleyball as the Ghosts look to begin the season on a high note. I think many teams have a shot to be very strong this year, and I expect WA to have a strong showing in the DCL during this upcoming spring.
