Sports Picks of the Week 2/15-2/22

National – Red Sox Spring Training. While this may not be a game to watch, fans should start to get excited for baseball season. Spring training should be interesting to watch to see how Crawford and Gonzalez look in these pre-season warm-ups. The team must begin to mesh early in order to have good chemistry that has become expected from Sox fans ever since the 2004 World Series. Another interesting thing to watch will be the health of Josh Beckett, as well as the entire pitching staff. The Sox have a solid rotation with Lester, Beckett, Buchholz, Lackey, and Matsuzaka. However, the bullpen remains untested but could be strong with Jenks, Bard, and Papelbon leading the way, but also a need for strong arms that could be needed in the 6th and 7th innings. Overall, the Red Sox look to follow up their strong offseason with a great season, that many Red Sox fans expect to yield a World Series championship, especially with their new lineup and resilient pitching staff.

WA – Swim and Dive Team. The swim and dive team will be attending Boston University this Saturday for sectionals. Many of the best swimmers from WA, including captain Matt Tynan, will be swimming in the many events to try and earn a spot at states which are later in the year. Fans should go out and attend to cheer on the Grey Ghosts as they look to improve on their already fantastic season. Many swimmers have qualified to swim in these tough races, and hopefully, they will be able to figuratively bring home the hardware. I expect a strong showing from the swim team, especially Matt Tynan, who is looking to beat some school records during his races while also beating the competition like he has all year.
