The past few years at Westford Academy, the traffic progression has been a bit of a jumble. Cars would pile up in a queue out in front of the school.

Recently a plan has been developed to change this dilemma. It was put into affect a few weeks ago to alleviate congestion in the front of Westford Academy and to get as many cars off the road and into the parking lot. The buses now drop off and pick up students at the main entrance. The cars now traverse to the back and avoid the congestion of the front entrance. However, this wasn’t the original intention.

Paul Staratt, the town engineer, originally wanted parents to enter through Hartford Road and through a narrow opening in the teacher’s parking lot of the Academy and drop them off on the sidewalk. The entrance was too narrow and the buses still needed somewhere to go. So the buses ultimately ended up in the front of the school.

“The total number of cars in the lines has improved tremendously,” said Principal Jim Antonelli.

The feedback from parents states that the traffic on Patten Road is much more suitable. So it seems the student population could adapt to this change. But is change easy to accept?

“Change is not easy,” Antonelli said. “Whenever you make changes, particularly when they have performed this ritual for a long time, students know how things have happened around here.”

Such change is necessary in order to improve the society of Westford Academy. It seems to be mainly a matter of convenience to parents.

“It is an issue of safety and timing. People are busy. We are trying to assist in making this process safe and efficient for folks,” Antonelli said.

The community of Westford Academy has not complained about the new situation said Antonelli.
